From Fear to Publish
How to rewrite your beliefs and step fully into your identity as a writer.
Hello you š¤
Today I want to dive into something. I guess most of us know the feeling: why can it sometimes feel scarier to hit the publish button than even to write our posts?
It makes a lot of sense.
Itās a vulnerable thing to show our writing and to expose our hearts⦠and our talents.
The Courage to Share Our Work
As writers, we put heart and soul into our pieces. We take pride in them. They mean a lot to us.
Yet, it can feel easier to āhideā a bitānot to go out there and tell our Instagram following that weāre on Substack, writing; not to feel fully aligned with our work without feeling panic and insecurity.
And you know what? Itās kind of sad that we sometimes feel like this.
Most people, I guess, who love to write, are those who have been writing in their rooms since they were childrenāstories, poems, rhymes.
Itās part of us. Part of our identity. Something we just love.
We love to create these writing pieces, even when we have no readers. And still: when we do have readers.

Embracing the Fear of Visibility
I know this feeling myselfāso, so well.
I recently created an Instagram account for my writing. It feels tricky for me, since Iām not really an Instagram kind of girl (I love those who areāitās not to say anything negative. Iām just more into this platform, which is for longform texts rather than pictures. Thatās just an honest truth from my side).
Yet, I would love to reach more people with my writing.
In the past two months, Iāve grown from 250 subscribers to almost 2.2K subscribers, plus 3.3K+ Substack followers.
Here, it feels more natural to me. Yet I fully understand the fear creeping in right before hitting publish.
Transforming Beliefs & Visualizing Growth
So, letās have a closer look at that and:
First: Work with our limiting beliefs in order to replace them with better ones.
Next: Create a crystal-clear picture of ourselves as the writers we dream of being or becoming.
Iāve written more about defining ourselves as writers in this articleāplease have a look if you feel like it: āāHow I Gained 815+ Subscribers in 30 Days - The exact mindset shifts and growth strategy I used to build momentum on Substack ā without being an influencer.āā
My personal belief is that we have to replace negative beliefs with positive ones. We can also do this through practicing looping affirmations.
Find a former article about that here: āāHow Looping Affirmations Can Rewire Your Mind - Rewiring self-worth, confidence, and inner calmāone repeated phrase at a time.āā
Then, we have to define who we want to be in order to become it.
I love having idols, and thatās a creative and inspiring process to be in as well.

Practices for Writers: Beliefs & Identity
So letās get into the practices of:
Changing our belief systems
Defining ourselves as writers
Work with Our Limiting Beliefs to Replace Them with Better Ones
Our beliefs shape the way we write, share, and see ourselves as creators. Often, itās not lack of talent that holds us backāitās the invisible voice of limiting beliefs whispering: āWho are you to publish this?ā or āNo one will care about what you write.ā
The first step is awareness. Notice the negative thoughts that arise when you think about hitting āpublish.ā Write them down. Seeing them on paper gives you distance and perspective.
Next comes challenge. Ask yourself: Is this belief really true? More often than not, itās just a habit of thinking, not a fact.
Finally, replace these limiting beliefs with empowering ones. For example:
Instead of āNo one will read this,ā try: āMy words matter, and the right readers will find me.ā
Instead of āIām not good enough,ā try: āI am growing, learning, and improving with every piece I write.ā
You can reinforce these new beliefs through looping affirmationsāshort, positive statements you repeat daily to train your mind to think differently. Over time, these affirmations become part of your creative mindset, making it easier to publish without fear.
Remember: every writer faces doubt. The key is not to eliminate fear but to transform it into motivation and self-belief.
Defining Ourselves as Writers
To grow as writers, itās not enough to simply writeāwe also need to see ourselves clearly as the writers we aspire to be. How you define yourself shapes your confidence, your habits, and the way you share your work with the world.
Start by asking yourself:
Who do I want to be as a writer?
What kind of stories, poems, or essays do I want to create?
What impact do I hope my writing has on others?
Visualize your ideal writing self. Picture the habits, the mindset, and the daily practices that define that person. Maybe youāre a writer who publishes consistently, engages deeply with readers, or experiments fearlessly with new styles. Hold that image in your mind.
Next, align your actions with that vision. Every piece you write, every post you share, and every small step you take is an act of defining yourself. The more intentional you are, the more your identity as a writer strengthens.
It can also help to look up to writers you admire. Study their work, their routines, and their courage. Use them as inspiration, but remember: your path is unique. Defining yourself as a writer is about claiming your own voice and trusting it.
Finally, remind yourself: being a writer isnāt only about outputāitās a way of living, thinking, and feeling. Every day you write, you reinforce your identity as the writer you dream of becoming.
